This is my mom’s cousin’s book of poetry. He was a NASA Rocket Scientist originally from Chillicothe, TX (right between Amarillo and Witchita Falls, neither of which are very impressive urban locales). It kind of looks like a cult bible/the cover of The Book of Scientology. My mom’s family comes from a long line of cotton pickers, if that’s even relevant. I never knew about him until about 2 weeks ago when my mom mentioned she’d had lunch with his brother, whom she hadn’t heard from in 20 some odd years. When I found out he was a Rocket Scientist and produced a book of poetry, I Amazon-primed a copy as fast as my little Tumbling fingers could type. Escape From the Iris Village is #1,633,007 is Amazon’s Best Selling Books Ranking. He really needs my guidance on book covers, I thought. I follow like 10 blogs completely devoted to excellent book covers. But at least it’s ranked, right? How cool. J. C. R and I should be email friends!
When I received my copy I was unfortunately faced with a mediocre anecdotal memoir in the form of AA/BB…/XX rhyming couplets. Literally the guy just layed out his entire life story like that. But he had produced a body of work! People he knew from my family or otherwise, classes he took, battles in health, love, etc. He had a thing to show! I wanted to know more.
Then my mom called me two days ago. He died of cancer the day my copy of his book came in.
So now I have this whole body of work that is tangentially related to me and my family’s history, but totally awfully relayed (and displayed), and I sort of feel this responsibility to the work now since I had this whole idea of being friends with him in my head and I’m going to find a way to make it worthwhile somehow.
